Spring Mountain
8 x 8 inches
$250

Why Did I Paint This?

This art was inspired by the mountain who watches over this region, La Montagne Sainte-Victoire. Last Winter, heading into Spring, I spent many days painting en plein air about 30 minutes north of Aix-en-Provence. Straight up the hill out of the valley where Aix rests, you can discover an amazing view of our mountain. It was there on a beautiful day that I painted this piece, before the first confinement.

As we go into a third confinement here in France, I thought it apt to remember better times, sunny days, and green grass betwixt your toes, confinement and covid free.

Kentucky Horse Country in Winter
4 x 4 inches
$75

Kentucky Roots

Yes, I know it’s Easter and so sharing my winter art is an odd choice. However, I wanted to share a bit about my Kentucky roots on Easter day, a special day for my family and I growing up.

This painting is actually inspired by a photograph taken near Paris, Kentucky. It evokes a lot of emotion for me. These rolling hills coated in snow, the lone horse grazing, fences lining the paddocks and the sun over the tree line - these are the scenes from my childhood.

Easter

La Pâques

Easter was always a very special day in my family. My grandparents were strict(ish) Catholics from Detroit, of polish descent. Like many of their generation, Easter was a big day for celebration and we always spent the day dressing up to the nines, going to mass and having a big polish meal together (although less and less as my grandma got older and couldn’t be bothered to cook for days and make 800 pierogi for the family). I remember loving the sacred, special feeling of this day. Little Avery always got a fancy new dress for mass on Easter, and my family always looked darn good in their dresses and suits.

France still safeguards their Sundays for families, and as it remains a largely catholic country at its base, I suspect today is as special here, as it was for me in my childhood.

I am missing my family very much today. I hope you can spend time today with yours, regardless if you celebrate Easter.

Easter in France looks pretty good from my view here, but nothing compares to Easter with your whole family, celebrating Spring together.

Artist to Follow

Finally, I’d like to share my favorite artist to follow this week: Teresa Poon. Teresa’s landscape painting on paint sample swatches immediately got my attention and I’ve been loving her intricate, bright, and nature oriented work ever since. Give her a look!

Until next time!
