Celebrating 3K Followers

This week I reached 3K followers on Instagram! It’s a small step in the bigger direction of sharing my art with the world and I’m so grateful to you all.

Thank you.

What’s So Great About Instagram For Artists?

I love Instagram, there’s no doubt about it. I truly believe Instagram is a perfect artist’s template. It allows me to curate my very own portable gallery front, stream details of painting, show my followers into my studio daily - it’s truly changed the game of professional artists the world over. There’s no longer SO much necessity to rely on Galleries to “make it”, artists who know how to market themselves can and do find success thanks to these new apps. (If you’re a NOLA follower, you’ll know the enormous success of Ashley Longshore and how she found her massive following through Instagram).

Not All…Great

However, the downsides of Instagram can be extreme and I work relentlessly to offset the negative effects of this virtual world we throw ourselves into everyday, while simultaneously doing what helps show and sell my art on this platform. (Think positive affirmations, conscious time set aside for not using my phone, etc.)

The issue with Instagram, and what makes it so addicting and affective, as that it shows us one beautiful, curated, front-facing side of a person’s life/business. I am an artist and so making my page look beautiful, curated and professional is part of my full-time job. The hours I spend editing, organizing and posting on Instagram is truly work (I enjoy this work, but it is time-consuming, marketing work!)

From the audience side, it can be very, very easy to fall into despair and negative comparisons. This happens to me quite often when following other artists who are well ahead of me on their career paths. Instagram drives us to compare ourselves, when there’s really no way to know where that person is in their journey, who they having helping them, and how their real life looks outside of their curated page.

A Grain Of Salt

It’s so important to remember that all the work we put on social media is only one face of the story, my page included. It’s part of the reason I love writing these emails to you all, creating blogs and actually talking about my work to people in real time.

If you ever have a question, a comment, a curious inquiry about what’s going on in my studio today, etc., do not hesitate to send me a message. Having conversations about art and my process is what keeps this whole thing real, alive and not just a gallery face on Instagram.

Artist to Follow

My favorite artist to follow this week is Terracotta House. Created and Led by Florida based Valerie Noell, this artist’s shop has it all: prints, paintings, home goods and more, all curated with a bright, flawless, light-hearted beauty. Valerie has a true gift for storytelling (she runs a creative agency as well) and it shows in the cohesive colors, patterns and textures of her brand. If you love soft tones, peachy jungle abstracts, and beautifully curated art, you need to check out her marketplace right now.

Until next time!
Avery & M. Beauregard
